Spring is in the air and adoptions are up! This month we’ve been very busy with adoptions of cats, dogs, ferrets, and rabbits! If you are looking to adopt, we just might have the perfect pet for you! Please feel free to check out our adoptions page for more information on how you can adopt a pet from Acadiana Humane Society.

Please keep in mind that pets are a lifetime commitment. When considering gifts for children for Easter, please do not give a baby bunny or duckling or other live animal without the parent’s permission! Many baby rabbits are surrendered after Easter when the newness of the babies wears off and the reality of their responsibility sets in. Plush pets & chocolate bunnies are the best option in most cases. Always research any new pet before getting one. Rabbits can live a long, healthy life if properly cared for. Also, please remember to adopt rather then shop when looking for a new family member. Both Acadiana Humane Society and Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue have many rescue rabbits available for adoption. Thank you!

Acadiana Humane Society volunteers will be at Camp Bow Wow’s Cupids & Canines Adoptathon on Sunday, February 17th from 11:00AM to 3:00PM with 15+ adoptable puppies & dogs, and Ms. Bunz the big white Californian rabbit. We will have two tents set up side by side (one white with purple Rally to Rescue on it, and one red Rajun Cajun tent). In these tents you will be able to meet our adoptable animals. As well as purchase wonderful home baked cupcakes and other goodies in our Bake Sale! We will also be selling purple Rally to Rescue t-shirts, McCartney 2013 Dog Calendars, as well as doggy bags for cleaning up after your pooch, and other pet related items. Some of our volunteers from Three Geeks Studio will also be there with their handcrafted jewelry. We will also have a raffle for a dog gift basket to be given away just before 3:00PM. Donations by cash or check are also welcomed. All proceeds at the two Acadiana Humane Society tents will go to help pay on our overwhelming vet bills.

There will be several different Acadiana area animal rescues in attendance, all with their own adoptable dogs and fundraisers.

There will also be a vet on site offering a rabies clinic where you can get your dog or cat updated on their rabies vaccine for only $10.00! He is also offering microchipping of your pets for only $20.00.

Viva La Waffle will be there selling their famous and wonderfully delicious waffle sandwiches!

Many thanks to the Acadiana Humane Society volunteers who came out to help with the 2013 Krewe des Chiens dog parade today! Foster dogs Sophie, Andre, Ramon, Brid, Hailey, Ianto, Cooper, and Jackson were all in attendance and had a blast! It’s that time of year again! The Krewe des Chiens dog parade is this Saturday, February 2, 2013. The parade rolls downtown from Lafayette Street to Parc San Souci starting at 2M. Acadiana Humane Society needs volunteers ASAP for the dog parade downtown on Saturday! Click here to view the dog parade map.
  • We need two people from 11am to 1pm to help at the barricades on Central St. to tell people they can not park there due to the parade. If anyone argues, they tell them they will be ticketed. Once the police arrive at 1pm to do this job, then these volunteers are free to either watch the parade or join us walking in it.
  • We need one volunteer to help sell bottled water for the Krewe des Chiens as an Acadiana Humane Society representative from 11:30 until 1.
  • I need other volunteers to help from 1pm until the parade is over. We need 1 or 2 people (we may have 1 person – Thanks Kristy!) to carry the Acadiana Humane Society banner. We need people to walk our foster dogs or carry puppies for us. Dog walkers/carries must be 18 or older.
  • Also, if anyone has a wagon or two or three that is large enough to hold safely a wire crate we have a handicapped Pekingese that needs to be pulled in the parade, as well as puppies that can ride if there are not enough walkers.
  • We need people to pull the wagons & people to throw beads.
Please contact us ASAP via email at ahspets@gmail.com if you can help! Thank you!

Three Acadiana Humane Society volunteers spent the day today pulling nine dogs from a breeder that is trying to get rid of what she has. One female miniature Australian Shepherd, one female Boston Terrier, one female Maltichon, two male Chihuahua’s, two male Yorkies, one female Yorkie and one male Pekinese. The Boston & the Chi Chi’s have major skin issues and will be going to a vet tomorrow for a skin scraping to make sure they are not contagious. They have all had baths and are currently in foster homes under quarantine and will see one of our vets as soon as possible. We’ll post pictures a little later on our Facebook page. We are looking for donations to help with their vet bills. If you would like to sponsor one or more of these dogs and help provide for their vet care, there are several ways you can do this. You can make a tax deductible donation via PayPal on our website using the Paypal link on the side of this page. You can mail a check or money order to Acadiana Humane Society; P.O. Drawer C; Sunset, LA 70584-0536. If you want to specify which rescue dog your payment goes to, you may make a note with your payment. You can also make a donation via credit card or debit card through the vet we plan to use at Country Place Veterinary Clinic and ask them to apply it to Acadiana Humane Society’s vet bill for the nine breeder dogs. The phone number for Country Place Veterinary Clinic is (337) 394-6296. Thank you!
