This picture was taken by Victor’s foster family just a few weeks before he went to his forever home. Victor was adopted on February 20, 2010. Every dollar raised by voting for Victor goes to Acadiana Humane Society’s Spay/Neuter Fund!

Oscar has been with Acadiana Humane Society since May 2009. He has seen many dogs come into the animal rescue system, and leave when adopted. Oscar really wants a home of his very own. He doesn’t understand why no one wants an older dog who only wants a home with someone to hold him and love him. Won’t you be a Saint and adopt this dog? If you are interested in adopting Oscar, you can meet him at the Lafayette Petco this Saturday from 12Noon to 4PM.

Oscar is a sweet Red Doxie. The vet estimates that he is about 4 years old, based on the good condition of his teeth. However, his graying fur has us thinking he may be a few years older. Oscar is crate trained. He is mostly house trained, but has an occasional accident. Oscar loves attention. He craves the companionship of people. Oscar loves to go for car rides. He will sit on a lap in the back seat and just stare out the window wagging his tail.

He gets along great with other dogs, for the most part. But, he does have jealousy issues when it comes to sitting on laps. He either needs a home where he can be the only lap dog (other dogs need to be too big to sit on laps), or with enough laps to go around for every dog. Oscar prefers not to be left alone. But, he is learning that he can not always be with someone. Oscar will bark at cats when they are on the other side of the fence. But, living at the Cat Ranch, Oscar has learned to tolerate and coexist with cats. He should do fine in a home with cats that do not antagonize him.

Oscar has some scarring on his back and tail, that the vet says indicates he may have been run over when he was younger. He does run under cars, so he needs to go to a home with a fenced in yard. Oscar prefers to spend most of his time inside with people.

Oscar’s adoption fee is only $100.00 (reduced due to his age). If you would like to be considered to adopt him, please fill out a prescreening application. Dog adoptions do require a home visit.

Saturday, Feb 6th.         Parade Rolls at 2PM!

Acadiana Humane Society, a no-kill non-profit animal rescue, is in need of volunteers to offer their time and service with the Krewe des Chiens Dog Parade in Lafayette on Saturday, February 6th. The dog parade is a fundraiser to help all area animal rescues. I will outline the volunteer job openings available, and the time needed to arrive. If you can help, please email Sue Rabeaux at suerabeaux@gmail.com with your name, cell phone number, and what job you would like to commit to.The parade theme is Hawaiian “Lu Howl.” Volunteers are welcome to dress Hawaiian if they like.

Two teenagers or adults to walk the parade and Carry the Acadiana Humane Society Banner

• Arrive at 1PM and check in at the volunteer desk in front of the Federal Court Building on Lafayette Street.
• Walk together while holding up the Acadiana Humane Society banner.
• Acadiana Humane Society volunteers will be walking behind our banner.

Two adults to work Security Detail (MUST be 18 or older)

• Arrive at Noon and register at the volunteer desk in front of the Federal Court Building on Lafayette Street downtown.
• Assignment is to help keep parade watchers off of the road in your assigned area.
• As well as picking up trash in your assigned area at the end of the parade (bags will be provided).

Two or more adults to walk Acadiana Humane Society Adoptable Dogs (MUST be 18 or older)

• Arrive at 1PM and find Sue Rabeaux (If you sign up, we will exchange cell phone numbers).
• Or, make arrangements to meet Sue Rabeaux earlier to pick up and transport the foster dog you will be walking.
• Assignment will be to walk one of our adoptable dogs during the parade.
• Also, doggie bags will be provided to clean up after the dog you walk.

Other Adults, Teenagers, & Supervised Older Children to Walk the Parade with Acadiana Humane Society

• We need people to walk in the parade and pull decorated wagons. The wagons will carry the Mardi Gras beads for the volunteers to throw.
• Older children are welcome to walk and throw beads, as long as a parent is watching them.
  
• If you have a wagon you would like to decorate and bring, the theme is Hawaiian “Lu Howl.”
• If you have Mardi Gras beads you no longer want, please feel free to bring them to throw (We have some, but can always use more).

Please Note: Our apologies for not posting the flyer before the event. But, due to technical difficulties we were having trouble posting updates and images to our cat blogger.

Although our hurricane safe animal shelter is not fully constructed yet, we have been using it to house kittens in cage systems. We have also been able to crate dogs on cold and/or wet nights, so they don’t have to sleep in their dog houses in the outdoor kennels. We still need to add interior walls, plumbing, fixtures, etc. However, as long as the animals do not run loose, we can keep them safe inside the incomplete shelter as needed. We have an air conditioner/heater window unit that used to be sufficient for keeping the inside of the animal shelter warm. However, the heater has died and no longer works. We have priced a new unit that is the right size for our shelter. We urgently need $700.00 to purchase this ac/heater unit. If anyone can help, we can accept PayPal donations specifically for the heater at shelter@acadianahumane.org.
