Acadiana Humane Society is in need of cat, dog, and small animal supplies! We currently have 89 cats, 15 dogs, 9 guinea pigs, 3 ferrets, and 7 rabbits in our care and we could really use the following items to provide the proper care for them:
1. Purina Pro Plan cat & kitten food
2. Cat treats
3. Cat litter
4. Cat furniture & scratching posts (current ones are extremely used and worn)
5. Cat toys
6. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls
7. Small blankets & towels
8. Small & Medium size plastic taxi/crates
9. Medium sized wire crates
10. Rabbit pellets
11. Guinea pig food
12. Marshall’s ferret food
13. Kaytee or Carefresh paper bedding for small animals
14. Gift cards to Petco, Petsmart, Walmart, Target, etc. (places that carry pet supplies).
Acadiana Humane Society donations can be dropped off to us at any of our events (see website for list). We also have a donation box in the lobby of Bridge Storage on Ambassador Caffery in Lafayette. Now through the end of May we have use of the donation bin at Petco South located at 605 Settler’s Trace Blvd. in Lafayette. Or, you can call/text us at 337-371-5477 or email us at ahspets@gmail.com to make arrangements for us to meet you to pick them up. We can also accept Paypal donations and we have a Paypal button on the side of our website.

*Also, please be aware that while our office may be closed during some days, we will reply to emails and process applications as we can. We are a foster based rescue, so there is no public facility to visit. Our animals can be viewed online on our Facebook page and our Petfinder page. If you are interested in meeting one or more of our pets, please download and fill out our prescreening application and submit it to us via email or fax. Email is actually faster as we are not always in the office to check the fax machine. Once an application is processed, we can make an appointment to meet, or we will arrange to bring the selected pet to our next adoption event. Our animal rescue is 100% volunteer and all of our volunteers have families and jobs outside of the rescue, so it may take a little time to hear back from us. While we try to respond to everything within one business day, we get hundreds of emails and messages daily, and sometimes it is just not possible to reply to every one right away. Email is usually the fastest way to get a response, since replies can be made late at night if need be. We believe it is important to allow our volunteers some free time to spend with their families. Thank you for understanding.

The weather is warmer, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and the litters are being born. Even the stray parakeet we took in is laying eggs. If your pets are not spayed or neutered, now is an excellent time to get it done so that your pets do not add to the unwanted litters being born in Acadiana. Hundreds of animals die in government run animal control facilities every day because there just are not enough homes, and not enough animal rescues, to house them all. Acadiana Humane Society is a no-kill animal rescue. Once an animal is in our care, he or she is safe. Our animals are cared for as long as it takes until an adoptive home can be found for them. While this is wonderful news for the animals already in our care, it means there are many more out there that we don’t have room for and can not save. Please spay and neuter and do your part to help become a part of the solution to unwanted pets. If you live in or near Lafayette, Louisiana, we recommend you check out Spay Nation Lafayette to get your cat or dog spayed or neutered. Spay Nation Lafayette is offering a special, by appointment only, feral cat package during the month of April. Check out their website for more information on their feral cat program. If you live in or near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, we recommend Azalea Lakes Veterinary Clinic. There are many other vets and spay/neuter programs in Acadiana that you can use as well.
Spring time is the time of the year for Easter baskets and bunny rabbits. But, is a bunny rabbit right for you and your family? In our opinion, Easter is not necessarily the best time to get a bunny, especially if you haven’t done your research first. Did you know that indoor rabbits that are properly cared for can live for ten or more years? Did you know that 95% of “Easter bunnies” don’t make it to their first birthday, or are surrendered to animal control, or are dumped outside to fend for themselves? A domestic rabbit can not survive on it’s own in the wild. It is also illegal to dump any domestic animal outside to fend for itself. If you are considering a rabbit as a pet, please do your research so you know what your responsibilities will be to properly care for him or her. If you can’t handle or afford all that proper care includes, then please do the responsible thing and get a chocolate rabbit or a plush bunny, or a honey bunny for your Easter basket instead. If you do choose to get a rabbit, please consider adopting a spayed or neutered rabbit from Acadiana Humane Society, or Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue, or another shelter near you.
The honey bunnies are here! That’s right Great Harvest of Acadiana is doing it again! For every honey bunny purchased they will donate $1 to Acadiana Humane Society! They have two different sizes available this Spring! Great Harvest of Acadiana is located at 854 Kaliste Saloom in Lafayette. You can call & order your honey bunny bread at (337) 236-8966 to be sure they don’t run out before you can purchase yours.

Acadiana Humane Society needs your help. We’ve had rescue animals with several health issues and surgeries recently, and our vet bills are starting to grow where we can’t keep them paid off weekly. We currently have a foster cat being tested and treated for diabetes, as well as some cats with skin and eye issues, and several on antibiotics for illness. We currently owe Azalea Lakes Veterinary Clinic $284.67 for recent vet care, and we have an appointment later this week for spay/neuters on new intakes, as well as more blood work and treatment for a recently diagnosed diabetic foster cat. We also need to purchase more prescription cat foods for some special needs fosters with urinary or diabetic issues. We also had to take a couple of fosters this past week to Pet Care Animal Hospital for eye issues and illness and have not seen the bill yet. One of the cats will be returning to Pet Care for a recheck on Wednesday. If anyone would like to make payments directly on our vet bills to the vets, you can call Azalea Lakes Vet Clinic at 225-755-3838 or Pet Care Animal Hospital at 337-988-1100 and ask them to apply your credit card payment to the account of Acadiana Humane Society. You can also send a donation to help with our vet bills using the Paypal button on the side of our website. Thank you!
