Fireworks

Please remember to protect your pets this month from the sudden scares of neighbors having fun with fireworks and firecrackers. Any cat or dog that would not normally leave your yard, can easily be spooked by the sudden loud booms and bright lights from fireworks. The week of July 4th is the busiest week for animal control and rescues due to the enormous amount of lost pets during this time. Please be sure to keep your pet safe and secure inside your home. When letting your dog out to potty, be sure to go with him and watch him closely. While inside, be sure to keep on a TV or some music to help cover up some of the noise from fireworks. Provide a safe den or hideaway for them to escape to inside your home if they need to. If your dog is normally afraid of thunder and fireworks, consider letting him/her wear a Thundershirt to help him/her feel calmer. If your pet is not microchipped, discuss your options with your veterinarian and be sure to register your pet’s microchip with the issuing company.

If your dog or cat does manage to escape and take off during this time, please be sure to immediately start working on finding your pet. An excellent resource is Lost My Doggie (and Kitty too) dot Com. This service will call all of your neighbors to let them know to be on the lookout, as well as create a flyer to mail out to area rescues. You can also submit a photo of your dog, cat, or other pet and create a flyer to post on Facebook, and other social media sites. We would also recommend doing a shelter search by zipcode at Petfinder.com to get a list of area rescues and animal control facilities, and emailing them the flyer. There are numerous Lost & Found Pet online sites that you can post to, as well as look to see if someone posted that they found your pet. You can even email us at ahspets@gmail.com a photo and information on your lost pet, and we can post it on our Facebook Lost & Found photo album. Be sure and include a description of your pet, area lost (including Parish), reward if any, and a phone number and/or email address to post so people can contact you if they find your pet. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, we will be unable to pick up and hold any lost pets at this time. But, we will gladly keep our eyes open if we know your pet is missing and contact you ASAP to let you know.

We are happy to remind everyone that for every bag of dog treats that are purchased throughout June & July from Great Harvest Bread Company of Acadiana, are donating $1.00 to Acadiana Humane Society! These dog treats are 100% whole wheat – nothing but the best for man’s best friend!

They also have a fantastic selection of breads and sandwiches made to order for lunches for the 2-legged variety. Be sure to stop by at 854-A Kaliste Saloom Rd. or visit their website. Please tell them you read about them on our website!

On behalf of our four legged fosters, thank you Great Harvest! Please stop by and purchase some for your dogs! Your dog will love them and it will help support our no-kill non-profit animal rescue too! If you don’t have a dog, but would like to help, you can purchase some to donate to our rescue! Our rescue dogs love the Great Harvest dog bones! Thank you!

raining cats and dogs

Acadiana Humane Society is currently above capacity on cats, dogs. We also have more rabbits then usual. Because of this we are currently on an intake freeze for cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs. This means we can not take in any new rescue cats or dogs. The only cats or dogs we will take in are returned cats or dogs that were adopted from us, provided the former foster home is still volunteering with our rescue. If they are no longer fostering, then we will help you find another home or rescue for the cat or dog you wish to return. We are only accepting ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other small exotic pets as new intakes at this time due to space issues.

During the month of July, we would really like to encourage adoption. If you choose to adopt a cat, dog, or rabbit from Acadiana Humane Society during the month of July, we will happily offer to allow you to adopt a second cat, dog, or rabbit from the same foster home, for only $25 more! Just be sure to mention that you saw this offer on our website when submitting your application to adopt.

Upcoming Adoption Events and Fundraisers:

*Note: Dates, times, and locations are subject to change. Please refresh this page or check our Facebook page, our Twitter page, or our Instagram page for the latest updates to our event schedules. Thank you!

*Also, please be aware that while our office may be closed during some days, we will reply to emails and process applications as we can. We are a foster based rescue, so there is no public facility to visit. Our animals can be viewed online on our Facebook page andour Petfinder page. If you are interested in meeting one or more of our pets, please download and fill out our prescreening application and submit it to us via email or fax. Email is actually faster as we are not always in the office to check the fax machine. Once an application is processed, we can make an appointment to meet, or we will arrange to bring the selected pet to our next adoption event. Our animal rescue is 100% volunteer and all of our volunteers have families and jobs outside of the rescue, so it may take a little time to hear back from us. While we try to respond to everything within one business day, we get hundreds of emails and messages daily, and sometimes it is just not possible to reply to every one right away. Email is usually the fastest way to get a response, since replies can be made late at night if need be. We believe it is important to allow our volunteers some free time to spend with their families. Thank you for understanding.
