Acadiana Humane Society was affected by Issac, but not nearly as bad as our neighbors in other parishes. We rode out the storm with only minor damage to the roof of our quarantine building, some broken pecan trees, a super saturated yard, and loss of electricity for 18 hours. We were lucky this time, as normally in a hurricane we loose power for a week or more and are normally flooded in for several days to a week, but this time we were on the calmer side of the storm. We are however in need of a generator for our hurricane safe animal shelter before the next big storm. The dogs and cats that had to stay in the shelter went without electricity and lights because we don’t have a generator. If anyone would like to donate to help us save up to get a generator, please be sure to note that your donation is for a generator when sending a check or Paypal donation. Paypal can be sent to info@acadianahumane.org or using the PayPal link on our website. Checks can be given to us in person at our Saturday adoption events at Petco (see schedule below), or mailed to us at Acadiana Humane Society; P.O. Drawer C; Sunset, Louisiana 70584-0536. If you would like to donate a generator you no longer need, you may email us at ahspets@gmail.com to make arrangements to get it to us. Or, if you own a business and would like to purchase and donate a new generator that could keep our shelter up and running in a storm, we would be happy to offer you free advertising on our website. Thank you very much!

We took time out from our storm preparations to stop by Lafayette Animal Control and rescue a Mini Rex rabbit when the ACO contacted us about her. We were also able to rescue a kitten at a gas station in Sunset during our storm preparations. We are glad that sweet Alastor, the kitten with the injured eye, did not have to be outside during the storm.

Thanks to hurricane Isaac, the Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulf Port took in 23 rabbits (so far) and contacted our friends at Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue for help. On September 4th we are taking two of Magic Happens adoptable rabbits, to help them make room to take more from Gulf Port. Magic Happens is also picking up three extra Isaac refugee rabbits for Acadiana Humane Society when they go to pick up as many rabbits as they can help with. Once these three Isaac refugee rabbits are spayed/neutered they will be available for adoption through our rescue.

Acadiana Humane Society is very much in debt to several different vets for the veterinary care of our rescue animals. Until our vet bills have been paid, we are very limited on our ability to take in new animal rescues without complete sponsorship to cover their spay/neuter, testing (heartworm for dogs, FeLV/FIV for cats), vaccinations, fecals, parasite treatments as needed, microchipping, care for illnesses, etc. While we do not like turning away an animal in need, our vets are requiring payment at time of services until we can pay off our current vet bills. If you would like to sponsor an animal, please let us know by contacting us at ahspets@gmail.com and telling us which animal you would like to sponsor. If you would like to help by paying on some of our current vet bills, you can use the PayPal link on the side of our website, or you can mail a check or money order to us at Acadiana Humane Society; P.O. Drawer C; Sunset, LA 70584-0536. Thank you!
