Be a hero today on #GivingTuesday and donate to help us help the animals in need, as well as improve the lives of the people that love their pets. As you know, we take in unwanted dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, and other small animals as we have the space and finances; through owner surrenders, strays, abandoned & illegally dumped pets, and animal control pulls. We see to the animal’s health needs, we spay or neuter all cats, dogs, rabbits, & ferrets. We vaccinate all cats, dogs, and ferrets. We also test all dog for heartworms, and test all cats for FIV, FeLV, and heartworms. We also treat all animals as needed for parasites and illness. We provide a safe and loving environment and proper vet care for all the animals in our care until a suitable adoptive home can be found for them. We hold adoption events at both Lafayette Petco locations on alternating Saturdays (see website for schedule), and sometimes at Petsmart too.

But, we are more then just your standard animal rescue. In addition to rescue and adoption, we also do what we can to help people keep their pets instead of surrender them when times get rough. We have been providing on average 600 pounds of dog and cat food to those who have fallen on temporary hard times, as well as to widows on fixed incomes, since we started our AHS Pet Food Bank in January or 2007. We have helped numerous families and individuals keep their pets during times of crisis, when we have had available funds, to get their pets vaccinated or through emergency vet care. We also have a Low Income Spay/Neuter Program to help those on lower incomes, or the elderly on fixed incomes, as well as single parents, to spay or neuter and rabies vaccinate their pets. This program was also started in January 2007. These programs rely totally on donations of pet food, pet supplies, and monetary donations to survive. When the funding and pet food & supplies is not available, we are unable to help those that need it. All we can do when we have nothing available, is to try and put them in touch with someone else that may be able to help them. Many people think we only help animals in need, but we also help people in need when we can. Acadiana Humane Society was blessed recently, and in turn we were able to bless some of our AHS Pet Food Bank recipients with smoked turkeys, hams, and groceries to provide them with a Thanksgiving dinner for themselves and their families. Recipients were crying tears of joy when we made a surprise delivery with Thanksgiving food for them, in addition to the usual pet food that we would normally bring them.

We have a Paypal button on the side of this webpage if you would like to donate. You can also mail us a check or money order made out to Acadiana Humane Society to our mailing address at P.O. Drawer C; Sunset, Louisiana 70584-0536. We can not do what we do without the help of those that help support us through their donations. Any donation, no matter how big or how small, goes a long way to help us do what we do! If you would like to designate your donation for one of our programs, please feel free to do so. If you do not designate your funds, then it will go into our general fund to be used wherever it is most needed at that time. Thank you!

Acadiana Humane Society volunteers will be at the following upcoming events:

Petco

*Note: Dates, times, and locations are subject to change. Please refresh this page or check our Facebook page, our Twitter page, or our Instagram page for the latest updates to our event schedules. Thank you!

*Also, please be aware that while our office may be closed during some days, we will reply to emails and process applications as we can. We are a foster based rescue, so there is no public facility to visit. Our animals can be viewed online on our Facebook page and our Petfinder page. If you are interested in meeting one or more of our pets, please download and fill out our prescreening application and submit it to us via email or fax. Email is actually faster as we are not always in the office to check the fax machine, and sometimes the fax fails. Once an application is processed, we can make an appointment to meet, or we will arrange to bring the selected pet to our next adoption event. Our animal rescue is 100% volunteer and all of our volunteers have families and jobs outside of the rescue, so it may take a little time to hear back from us. While we try to respond to everything within one business day, we get hundreds of emails and messages daily, and sometimes it is just not possible to reply to every one right away. Email is usually the fastest way to get a response, since replies can be made late at night if need be. We believe it is important to allow our volunteers some free time to spend with their families. Thank you for understanding.
