Acadiana Humane Society needs your help in several ways. Please read and help where you can, and share with others to help multiply the assistance to help our rescued animals. Thank you!

We are participating in Chase Community Giving’s contest and with your help we can win a portion of the $3 million dollars they want to donate to charity! If Acadiana Humane Society in Sunset, LA wins, we can use the money to pay off our vet bills, purchase much needed cat food, and finish the construction of the interior of our hurricane safe animal shelter. All of this would go a long way to helping our no-kill animal rescue thrive and be able to do more for homeless cats, dogs, and other pets. Please vote soon, as the contest ends on November 22nd! You can also share us on Twitter and Facebook and ask your friends to help vote too. Thank you!

Acadiana Humane Society is in urgent need of cat food! We currently have over 100 cats in foster care that need to be fed. As well as many AHS Pet Food Bank recipients who are asking for cat food to be able to keep their pets. We are almost out of cat food! We have plenty of donated dog food, but people rarely donate cat food. We will take ANY brand of dry and canned cat food, as we can use it for our Pet Food Bank to help low income families keep their pets! We do have our cats on specific diets of Purina One Chicken and Rice dry cat food, Purina Naturals, Purina Cat Chow, and Purina Kitten Chow. But, we have no funds to purchase any cat food! Donations to help us be able to purchase cat food can also be sent through PayPal to info@acadianahumane.org . Checks, money orders, and Petco or Wal-Mart gift cards can be sent to Acadiana Humane Society, P.O. Drawer C; Sunset, LA 70584-0536. If you would like to purchase cat food to donate, we have donation boxes in the lobby of Bridge Storage at 2510 Ambassador Caffery in Lafayette. Please be sure to see Linda or Miranda in the office if you would like to leave your name and address for a donation receipt. If you would like to donate to us in person, please either email our Director, Sue Rabeaux at suerabeaux@gmail.com or stop by one of our Petco adoption events and we can accept them at our adoption table. Please be sure that if you bring them to our adoption events at Petco, that you hand it to either Sue or an Acadiana Humane Society volunteer at our adoption table, to be sure that we get it. Acadiana Humane Society is also in need of donations to pay on our vet bills. Donations can be sent via PayPal to info@acadianahumane.org and designate in the note area that it is for vet bills.

We are also currently doing our winter raffle. Click here for more information and photos of the Dog Gift Basket valued at over $550.00! Gift basket includes all sorts of dog treats, toys, food, and supplies, as well as Petco Dog Training and Petco Grooming! For donations designated for our vet bills, we are giving away chances in our raffle. One chance is a $1.00 donation, or you can get six chances for every $5.00 donation. We will have raffle tickets available at our adoption events. The raffle drawing will be held on December 17th at 4PM at the Lafayette Petco.

ADOPT-A-RABBIT MONTH!

February is Adopt-A-Rescued Rabbit Month! Acadiana Humane Society has several retired Easter Rabbits available for adoption. You can meet one or two of them daily at the Lafayette Petco. We will also have more available to meet every Saturday in February from Noon to 4PM at our Petco adoption events. All rabbits are spayed or neutered and have an ear tatoo that either says MHR or AHS. Our rabbit adoption fee is $50.00 per rabbit, or $75.00 for a pair of rabbits.

CUPIDS AND CANINES ADOPTION EVENT!

Please join us at Camp Bow Wow’s Cupids and Canines adoption event! We’ll have a tent set up at Camp Bow Wow in Lafayette on Sunday, February 20th from 1 – 4PM! We will be having several opportunities at our tent, for you to help us raise money to help pay vet bills on our rescue animals.

Meet our adoptable dogs and puppies!
Bake Sale! People treats as well as dog treats will be available.
Raffle! Prizes to be given away at 4PM!
Dog related items available for sale.
Pet Food Bank Food Drive! We’re collecting donations of pet food & supplies.

Petco has graciously donated a free dog training class for our raffle! Other prizes to be announced. We will have raffle tickets available at Camp Bow Wow’s event, then draw the winners just before 4PM!

DOG PARADE!

Acadiana Humane Society will be walking in the Krewe Des Chiens Parade on Saturday, February 26 from 2 – 4PM! We will be walking as many of our adoptable rescue dogs as we can. We are still looking for several volunteers to help us walk dogs, pull wagons, throw beads, hold our banner, and work security detail. Donations of beads are also needed. If you would like to help, please email Sue at suerabeaux@gmail.com and let her know how you can help. We hope to see everyone else at the parade catching the beads we will be throwing! Please come out and support all area animal rescues in this large fundraising event.

Food Bank Food Drive

Please join Acadiana Humane Society, Best Friends, and the Petco Foundation in helping keep pets and families together! November 5th through 14th Best Friends has a table set up at the Lafayette Petco to promote Acadiana Humane Society and Petco Foundations Food Bank program. Patty Mehan, Best Friends volunteer, will be available on Saturday, November 13th and Sunday, November 14th to promote the Food Bank. A donation bin is always available at the Lafayette Petco to collect donated dry and canned cat food, dry and canned dog food, and cat litter. However, between November 5th and 14th, all donations of Hill’s Science Diet pet food will be matched pound for pound by Hill’s. The pet food donated and placed into the bin at Petco goes into Acadiana Humane Society’s Food Bank. This pet food is then provided to families suffering from economical stress to help them keep their pets.

All money raised at the Acadiana Humane Society tent at all three events will go to help with vet and pet food bills for our rescue animals! Look for the white and purple Rally to Rescue tent to find us! There will be over 70 different vendors at the Pumpkin Patch selling items, so please be sure to look for us while you are there! Also, at Bark in the Park there will be numerous animal rescues and other pet related vendors, so please be sure to find our tent! We’ll also have some of our adoptable dogs with us for you to meet!

Marc Gunn Benefit Concert

Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a musician who not only supported No Kill Animal Shelters, but wrote songs about it? In fact, there is. His name is Marc Gunn and he sings fun Celtic songs…. with a twist. Marc is the man behind “Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers”, a comedic album of Irish songs rewritten about cats. His song “Black Is …the Color (of My Cat’s Fur)” even includes a plea to congress to make ALL shelters No-Kill.

For over ten years, Marc Gunn is a seasoned musician. He has performed traditional and not-so-traditional Celtic music at venues from Ireland to Italy and everywhere in between. Now he’s bringing his unique style of Celtic music to Lafayette for an evening of Celtic music and fun.

Marc Gunn, Celtic American and Folk Musician and Podcaster, will be in concert presented by Folks of Acadiana to benefit non-profit no-kill animal rescue Acadiana Humane Society. The concert is on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 7PM at the First Lutheran Church at 301 West Farrel Rd in Lafayette, LA. Tickets are $15.00 each, children under 12 are free. 4th of July Birthdays

Four foster kittens will have their first birthday on Sunday, July 4th. All four have been available for adoption through Acadiana Humane Society since they were small kittens. They had been born in the home of the family that rescued their pregnant mother. Once they were old enough to be weaned, they came to our rescue. We took them in on August 22, 2009. You can see a picture of Tenten taking a bath the day we got her by clicking here. Once they were old enough, we had them tested, vaccinated, and altered. There were three boys: Neji, Haku, and Lee; and one girl: Tenten. Once fully vetted and ready for adoption at just a few months old, Tenten went to Petco on Louisiana Avenue in Lafayette, LA in the adoption center. Her brothers stayed in the unfinished shelter in a large cage. On Saturdays, the boys would go to Petco for adoption events. Everyone commented on how beautiful the kittens were. But, no one adopted them. Due to lack of space in our foster homes, and a virus affecting only kittens in their original foster home, Tenten had no choice but to stay at Petco in the adoption center cage system, where she still sits today as I write this blog entry. Tenten has really gotten used to all the attention she gets from the Petco employees and the customers in the store. She even got used to dogs barking and sniffing near her cage during training classes. She really loves it at Petco. But, to those of us who know and love Tenten, we really wish she had a home of her own. Tomorrow, on Independence Day, Tenten will be one year old and she will have spent most of her life living in a pet store. It is our birthday wish for Tenten that she be adopted soon into a wonderful new home.

All cats are fully vetted and this adoption fee helps with our vet expenses.

Annual Yard Sale & Bake Sale Fundraiser

The ANNUAL ACADIANA HUMANE SOCIETY YARD SALE and BAKE SALE is scheduled for Saturday, June 12th from 6AM to 2PM in the front yard at 4919 W. Congress in Lafayette (click here for map).

We are currently looking for donations for our yard sale. There is a donation box in the lobby of the Bridge Storage at 2510 Ambassador Caffery in Lafayette (click here for map). You may drop off your donations at Bridge Storage on Tuesdays through Fridays. Be sure to tell Miss. Linda that the items are for the animal rescue yard sale. If you have larger furniture items, please contact Sue at suerabeaux@gmail.com or 337-668-4484 to arrange to meet her at the yard sale location to drop them off during the week before the yard sale. We ask that all donations be clean and in gently used good condition. We are accepting toys, books, videos, music, clean dishes, kitchenware, Tupperware, collectibles, appliances, furniture, baby items, sporting goods, pet supplies, and most any clean item in good condition that would sell at a yard sale. No knives or undergarments please. Tax deductible receipts are available if you leave your name, mailing address, and a list of the items donated. Thank you!

Please come out on June 12th and support our no-kill non-profit animal rescue! 100% of the money raised will be used for the rescue animals to either pay vet bills, purchase pet food and supplies, or go into our shelter fund to help us complete our hurricane safe animal shelter.

In addition to yard sale items, we will also have a snack bar, snowball stand, and will be selling cold Coca-Cola products. There will be something for everyone. So, please stop by! Thank you!
